Freezing temps settle in for the night; cold weather on tap until mid-week

Freezing overnight temperatures and daily highs below 40 degrees are in the forecast through Wednesday, according to the National Weather Service.

The weather service has issued several cold weather-related warnings or notices, including a hard freeze warning, a wind chill advisory, a wind advisory, a hard freeze watch and a hazardous weather outlook.

Scattered flurries are possible before midnight tonight, with an overnight low around 20. Northwest winds will be 15 mph overnight, with gusts as high as 30 mph.

Monday will be sunny, with the temperature expected to reach near 32. Expect a north wind between 10-15 mph, with gusts as high as 30 mph. Monday night will be clear, with a bone chilling low around 15. Winds will be around 5 mph, becoming calm.

Tuesday again calls for a sunny day, with a high near 39. Tuesday night, expect a low around 24.

Wednesday calls for a slight chance of rain or freezing rain before noon, then a slight chance of rain. It will be partly sunny, with a high near 38. Rain is possible Wednesday night, and the low will be around 38.

Relatively warmer weather is expected Thursday, when the high is expected to reach near 58.

Metro Birmingham forecast: Cold to settle over region

It was 41 degrees at 6 a.m. in Birmingham and central Alabama is unlikely to warm up much today. Cold pushing into the region will settle in for a weekend stay, according to the National Weather Service.

The forecast for today calls for cloudy skies and a high just under 50 degrees. A freeze warning is in effect for tonight with a projected low below freezing at about 30 degrees.

Saturday should be sunny and clear but warm only to 52 degrees. The temperature Saturday night should fall again to about 30 degrees.

A little warmth should return Sunday with sunny skies warming to near 60 with an overnight low around 35 degrees.
