The Advantages of Pine in Furniture Construction

As a material used in furniture construction, pine has a solid reputation and continues to be the leading choice of many furniture manufacturers.? There are many reasons for the enduring popularity of pine furniture. Here, we discuss some of its many characteristics that make it the wood of choice for many artisans.

Cost
Of the many woods that manufacturers use in the construction of household furniture, pine continues to be one of the better value woods.? Pine furniture has ensured that quality materials are available to everyone, regardless of budget.

Complement
Because pine is quite neutral in colour, it is unique amongst the many different types of wood used in the manufacturing of furniture because, regardless of interior decoration, pine furniture will always complement, and very rarely clash.? Pine is suitable for a whole range of colours, dark, bright and pastel colours all go well with pine.

Resilience
Pine is an extremely hardwearing material, renowned for its robust and sturdy qualities.? The resilient nature of pine furniture means that it is very hard to damage, thus making pine the material of choice for many families concerning their home furnishing.? Pine furniture, when treated well, can endure for many years – adding to its cost-effectiveness as a material from which to construct furniture.

Uniqueness
The incredible graining effect that is a key feature of pine makes the wood fantastically individual in nature.? No two cuts of woods are ever the same, they all posses a unique character which means that any items of furniture made from pine, even when mass-produced, is unique unto itself.? For today's sentimentalities and tastes, pine furniture is perfect for stamping an individual feel to any room to which it is an addition.

?

Environmentally Sound
The majority of the pine used in the construction of furniture is sourced from renewable supplies.? Normally, the felling of one tree is counter balanced by the planting of another, making pine one of the most eco-friendly materials found in furniture manufacturing.? Choosing pine furniture over other types of wood, such as oak, means that you are acting in an environmentally responsible manner, and helping to conserve the world's natural resources. ?

Therefore, it is clear that pine has many advantages over other materials when it comes to furniture construction.? Items are not only attractive, they match all styles of interior design, are extremely cost effective, are environmentally sound, are well built and long lasting, but also adds a touch of individual flare to any style of furniture.

People can purchase pine furniture from many different places, but we suggest visiting online stores.? These stores are able to offer a much broader range in terms of style and cost, than a bricks-and-mortar shop, this is because, without the added costs of running a shop floor, they are able to store many more items of furniture than they otherwise could.? Prices are also a lot more competitive online, than offline, as there are more companies vying for custom, they need to provide incentives to ensure they stay in business; one such way in which this is achieved is by offering fantastic prices.? Of course, the main advantage of shopping online is convenience, online stores are open 24/7, and furniture is delivered by the store, rather than collected by the customer.

Gov.-elect Bentley to host dinner for Alabama congressional delegation

Published: Tuesday, November 30, 2010, 10:32 PM ??? Updated: Tuesday, November 30, 2010, 10:34 PM

Gov.-elect Robert Bentley will break bread Wednesday night in Washington with members of Alabama's congressional delegation, a fence-mending session after many of them endorsed someone else in the race for governor.

Bentley, who will be in Washington for two days of meetings on Capitol Hill and at the White House, is hosting a dinner for the Alabama group at a downtown restaurant.

Several of the Republicans in the delegation publicly backed Bradley Byrne in the final hours of the GOP primary runoff in which Bentley, the longshot candidate from Tuscaloosa, came from behind to win.

Bentley now jokes about how much of the GOP establishment was not in his corner, a spokesman said.

"As he has said, he's the governor of all of the people," Steve Bradley said. "He's good-natured about it. All of that is in the past."

But the relationship between the governor and the congressional delegation is crucial as the state faces a host of pressing issues in which state and federal government intersect.

"There is no fence to mend, as far as I'm concerned," said Rep. Jo Bonner, R-Mobile, through a spokesman. "The governor-elect can expect a strong partnership with the delegation, just as Gov. (Bob) Riley did. We'll be pulling for him."

During the eight years of Riley's governorship, he has met with Democrats and Republicans in the Washington delegation regularly on issues such as Medicaid, water wars and Defense Department contracts critical to the state's economy.

Birmingham City Council committee endorses two for Water Works Board seat

Published: Tuesday, November 30, 2010, 6:57 PM ??? Updated: Tuesday, November 30, 2010, 7:49 PM

A Birmingham City Council committee tonight endorsed two people for one vacant slot on the Birmingham Water Works Board.

The Utilities?Committee named Fultondale Mayor Jim Lowery, a current member of the board, and Ann Florie, executive director of Leadership Birmingham as their choices. The full council is expected to vote Tuesday.

While other council members were present, the only members of the committee to vote were Maxine Parker and Steven Hoyt.

Committee chairwoman Carole Smitherman has abstained from the endorsement process or the upcoming council vote because her husband, state Sen. Rodger Smitherman, is a lawyer who works with Charlie Waldrep, whose firm represents the utility.

Eleven candidates are seeking a six-year term on the board currently held by Lowery, whose term expired but continues to serve until a new appointment is made.

Parker and Hoyt could not agree on a single name for a recommendation, with Hoyt favoring Florie and Parker saying she favored either Lowery or Mountain Brook Mayor Terry Oden.

The council is not bound to accept the committee's recommendation.

Cordless Hammer Drill - Ryobi Cordless Drill

Cordless hammer drills are a must tool in any craftsman's or DIY enthusiasts' toolbox. The invention of the cordless drill and other cordless tools have made life much easier than lugging cables to and fro and are also much safer.

Most cordless hammer drills are 18 volt and are very powerful to drill materials like steel, wood, masonry and any surface a mains electric drill would be used for. The ideal way to work would be to have two batteries so one is always charging while you are using the other. The hammer action is a must when drilling concrete or masonry.

A cordless drill is quite suitable for drilling materials like wood, plastic and steel, but for a little more you would an all round drill in a cordless hammer drill. These drills can also be used as a power screw driver and with the reverse gear you are able to unscrew tight screws with ease.

They come in 2 speeds and some have variable speed control also.

Powerful Ryobi hammer drills have a second handle attached to allow you grab the drill with both hands when drilling hard surfaces or when using large bits. These drills come with keyless chucks and capable of taking half inch or 13mm bits. One thing to remember if you want a hole half inch in diameter, begin with a small bit and use a several bits in between before using the half inch bit. This will prolong the life of your drill and is also a safe manner in which to work in.

Whether you use a powerful, cordless hammer drill or a mains electric drill the main requirement to drill holes especially in steel is a sharp bit; Bits for drilling steel lose their sharpness over time but can be sharpened on a grinding stone to their original state.

One tip is to use some cooling liquid like oil or a mixture of oil and water; this will help to maintain the lifespan of the bits.

When using a drill make sure to wear safety goggles and do not have any loose clothing like long sleeves which could get wound around the bit and cause a serious accident. These cordless hammer drills are not toys and care should be taken when using them.
