Sunny and dry weather expected through much of the week

Sunny and dry describe daily conditions most days in this week's forecast, according to the National Weather Service.

Very dry conditions also increase the chance for fire, leading the weather service to issue a red flag warning for Monday from 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Such a warning is issued when critical fire weather conditions are either occurring or will shortly. A combination of strong winds, low relative humidity and warm temperatures will create explosive fire growth potential.

Tonight's forecast calls for clear skies, with a low around 24.

Monday will be sunny, with a high near 52. Partly cloudy skies are expected Monday night, with an overnight low around 30.

Tuesday again calls for sunny weather, with a high near 54. Overnight, temperatures will reach a low around 30.

Wednesday calls for a 20 percent chance of rain, with mostly cloudy skies and a high near 51. Wednesday night will be mostly cloudy, with a low around 37.

Forecast: Near freezing temperatures expected to arrive Saturday night

Temperatures are expected to plummet overnight Saturday across central Alabama and meteorologists said there will be little warm-up until later this week.

Tonight's low will be around 34.

It should be a pleasant, albeit cloudy, afternoon Saturday across the Birmingham area, according to the National Weather Service.

The high Saturday is expected to reach 57, but after 6 p.m., when a widespread rain is expected to soak the area, temperatures will begin a downward spiral, said meteorologist Gary Goggins.

By 7 a.m. Sunday, there will be near freezing temperatures across the area with 20 to 25 mph winds, Goggins said.

"(Temperatures) are going to continue to hover near freezing all day long," Goggins said.

Saturday night's rain is expected to continue through about noon Sunday. Some "snow showers" could pass through as well, but Goggins said any flurries are not expected to stick.

"It'll be nice to look at, but that's about it," Goggins said.

Temperatures will continue to drop Sunday night, when the overnight low is expected to dip to 18.

There will be little relief from the cold Monday afternoon; the high will likely only reach 32 with the overnight low again dropping into the upper teens.

The Birmingham area will be significantly warmer, however, by Thursday when the high is expected to be near 65 with a night-time low around 47.

Forecast: Ideal weather expected in Atlanta and the Birmingham area for SEC Championship Game

The weather should cooperate Saturday afternoon?for fans traveling to the Georgia Dome as Auburn and South Carloina compete for the SEC championship.

Saturday's National Weather Service forecast for the Birmingham area and Atlanta calls for cloudy skies -- with only a 20 percent chance of rain -- and an afternoon high in the low 60s.

Temperatures in both cities are expected to drop into the low 30s Saturday night.

The Birmingham area will be mostly sunny Sunday, with a high near 47 and an overnight low around 25.

Clouds will be moving in tonight as the Birmingham area braces for rain on Monday, according to a National Weather Service forecast.

For tonight, skies will see increasing clouds, with light winds and lows around 41. On Monday, showers are likely with possible thunderstorms after noon. Highs will be near 58, with rain chances of 70 percent.

Rain is expected to continue through Monday night and into Tuesday, with lows in the 50s and highs in the 60s.

Near-freezing temperatures expected tonight in Birmingham metro area

Temperatures in the Birmingham metro area will continue to drop to close to freezing tonight, according to the Birmingham office of the National Weather Service.

Clear skies and calm winds are also in the overnight forecast. The same conditions will be in place Sunday with temperatures climbing to around 60 degrees for the high.

At around 6 p.m. tonight, the NWS reported the temperature at the Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport was 46 degrees with wind out of the north at around 5 miles per hour.

Rain chances enter the forecast starting on Monday and lasting through Tuesday, according to the extended forecast from the NWS. Freezing temperatures are not expected again until Tuesday night.

Forecast: Foggy Thanksgiving Day morning expected across central Alabama

Folks planning on driving Thanksgiving Day should be extra careful as the National Weather Service forecast calls for a dense, patchy fog across central Alabama Thursday morning.

There is a 20 percent chance of showers before midnight with a low around 58.

The fog is expected to move in after midnight and reduce visibility to about half a mile at times before dissipating about 9 a.m.

Thursday's high will be near 76, with a low around 46. There is a 20 percent chance of rain during the day. The possibility of rain, and possibly a thunderstorm, will increase to 90 percent that night.

If you plan on going to Tuscaloosa for the Iron Bowl, be prepared for rain.

There is a 60 percent chance of rain Friday, but that should subside by halftime.

The afternoon high will be near 51, with temperatures dropping into the 40s during the second half of the game.

Alabama Council trust fund allows the transfer of 56.1 million to the Fund, less than expected
