A natural gas leak tonight forced authorities in Pelham to evacuate 22 homes in the Stonehaven neighborhood.

Capt. Dewitt Marcrum of the Pelham Fire Department said firefighters were called to Stonebridge Circle around 5 p.m. after receiving a complaint about the strong smell of gas in the area.

Residents were taken to the Municipal Court at the city's police headquarters while Alagasco workers searched for the source of the leak, Marcrum said.

"We've been able to locate (the leak) and patch the hole," Marcrum said. But as of 9:30 p.m., the cause of the leak was unknown.

Marcrum said he believed residents would be able to return home later tonight.
